Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency Ablation, a new cutting edge treatment offers
hope to cancer patients with tumors within the liver or other places of the body, such as the kidney or lung.
The gold standard treatment for tumors within the liver remains
the surgical removal of the tumor. Unfortunately many patients due to medical conditions or due to the location
of the tumor are not good candidates for surgery.
What is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Radiofrequency (RF) ablation is a new advance in medical technology
for treating tumors localized in certain organs such as the liver.
Due to advances in medical technology Dr.
Niedzwiecki can place a special needle through small
(less than 1/4 inch) incisions in the skin and using either ultrasound or a CT scanner is able to guide the tip
strategically into the tumor within the liver or other places of the body, such as the kidney or lung. Once this
special needle is in position an electrical current can be applied to the needle tip which gradually heats up.
As the needle tip gradually heats it will rise to a temperature which kills tumor cells.
How effective is Radiofrequency Ablation?
Results with this new technology rival that of surgical removal of tumors. The treatments have been safe and well
tolerated in the overwhelming majority of patients.
Is Radiofrequency Ablation performed on an in-patient or out-patient
basis?
This procedure is usually done on outpatient basis, the patient coming into the hospital and receiving a mild
sedation to put them into a light sleep during the procedure. After the procedure, patients may encounter some
mild pain which is easily controlled with oral pain medications.
