Sclerotherapy

A procedure to treat spider veins and visible varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a procedure performed to eliminate small, visible spider veins and varicose veins near the skin surface. Spider veins are usually treated by an injection of a special detergent solution, which
seal off the veins. This detergent solution removes fats or lipids which live in the vein wall and help normally stabilize the vein wall. When these lipids are removed from the vein wall, the vein wall collapses and the vein scars dissolve down and fade away. This procedure is known as sclerotherapy,” and can be completed in Dr. Niedzwiecki’s office. This procedure is usually done while you are awake. There is very little pain or discomfort. Afterwards, compression stockings are worn to reduce possible bruising and bleeding.

What Results can I Expect?

Sclerotherapy is very safe and produces good symptomatic and cosmetic results. Use of this special detergent solution renders the procedure virtually painless and has very low risks compared to Sclerotherapy which may be practiced in other settings which uses hypertonic saline solution.

Bruising, bleeding, or minor pain in the area of the injection is not unusual. Wearing compression stockings should help reduce these symptoms.
Infections at the site of the injections are very rare. There is a slight possibility that the varicose and spider veins may recur. Brownish spots may also occur at the site of the injections. This is not common.

It is recommended you elevate your legs while resting and wear compression stockings to decrease the bruising and the recurrence of the varicose veins. Wearing compression stockings aides in the disappearance of the spider and varicose veins following Sclerotherapy. Exercise will also help reduce the recurrence of the symptoms.
