Frequently Asked Questions

Treating Compression Fractures Without Major Surgery

Making a Decision:

Most patients find, or are referred to Dr. Niedzwiecki if they have had little or no relief of pain following conservative methods of treatment. Determining if you are a candidate for vertebroplasty begins with a consultation with Dr. Niedzwiecki. This is your opportunity to learn more about the procedure, as well as voice any questions or concerns you may have. After your consultation, you may need a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to best locate and evaluate the fractures most likely causing your pain. If you wish, we will schedule this for you. It is our goal to provide you with all the information you need to make a comfortable, well-informed decision about vertebroplasty.

After Vertebroplasty:

Most patients notice a significant reduction in their pain within a few hours following vertebroplasty. It is important to know, however, that not everyone gets complete pain relief as back pain can have many sources. Vertebroplasty is a major step in effectively treating osteoporotic compression fractures. Future fractures may be prevented by taking calcium supplements and medication that increase bone density. If new fractures do occur, the vertebroplasty procedure can be repeated.
